Opelika and Lee County residents are invited to gather at the Courthouse Square at noon on May 4 for the 66th National Day of Prayer.
The theme of this year’s National Day of Prayer is ,”For your great name’s sake! Hear us, forgive us, heal us,” and comes from Daniel 9:19 (KJV) which states, ”O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.”
Laura Fuller, one of the event’s organizers, said prayer is more important than ever in today’s world.
“Our country is based on prayer, and the Lord Jesus Christ. So, we believe that everybody should make the sacrifice and come out for this event,” Fuller said.
The non-denominational prayer and worship event will feature area pastors, music by OHS Choral Department members Allyson Petrone and Jeremy Robinson, as well as a proclamation and prayer by both Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller and Auburn Mayor Bill Ham.
According to the National Day of Prayer website, the event was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
Last year’s event brought in more than 300 people, and Fuller said she expects even larger numbers this year.
Participants are invited to bring their families and lunch. Chairs and tents will be provided.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the main sanctuary of First Baptist Opelika, located at 301 S. 8th St. Those unable to attend can hear a live broadcast on Hallelujah 910 AM.
